“Army of compassion” gives cancer survivor an Extreme Blessing Home Makeover

Volunteers welcome Barbara to her newly rebuilt Breezy Point home.

BREEZY POINT, NY – Three months ago, Barbara had seemingly lost it all. In mid-November, her Breezy Point home was flooded by Hurricane Sandy, leaving the 78-year-old feeling overwhelmed as to how she would ever rebuild.

“I could just cry, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” she told local news.

Barbara reacts after seeing her new home.But this past Saturday, Operation Blessing–along with more than 100 Bank of America volunteers–gave Barbara the surprise of a lifetime: a rebuilt home complete with new drywall, floors, paint, appliances and furniture.

The cancer survivor had been living in a basement apartment in Brooklyn ever since Sandy hit and was overwhelmed by her new home and the kindness of strangers.

“It’s just overwhelming with kindness and generosity, and I just can’t believe that they’re doing this for me,” Barbara told local news.
